Aurora, CO. 2019 Colorado Taste of Africa Festival, a celebration of the people of Africa through music, art, dance, food and joyful camaraderie. I wanted to capture the vast array of faces, colors, shapes, dress that reflect (only) a fraction of the hundreds of cultures, beliefs, and customs across the African Continent, right here in the Denver area. This portfolio shows the most recent African Diaspora as well as Africans whose ancestors landed on the shores of the U.S. for 200 years since 1619. Africa is a continent with 1.3 billion people, over 2,000 languages, with at least 3,700 people groups, adding to the world’s diversity of thought, connections, culture and identity. Through these photos, I want African people to see themselves beyond Eurocentric definitions and celebrate their heritage. Behind these faces lie stories of resilience, faith, perseverance and courage.
